Today is the birthday of my sweet friend, Kaitlin.

God was so kind to give her to me as a close friend almost 9 years ago! Our friendship grows stronger each year, and I thank the Lord for Kaity's sweet spirit and love for Him. She encourages me to put my relationship with my Savior first!

Charity

I just finished reading "The Four Loves" by C.S. Lewis. I was rather disappointed by it, until I read the last chapter, "Charity". It was excellent! So I recommend the book just for that chapter. :) One part of that chapter stood out to me particularly...

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside of Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.

I believe that the most lawless and inordinate loves are less contrary to God's will than a self-invited and self-protective lovelessness. It is like hiding the talent in a napkin and for much the same reason "I knew thee that thou wert a hard man." Christ did not teach and suffer that we might become, even in the natural loves, more careful of our own happiness. If a man is not uncalculating towards the earthly beloveds whom he has seen, he is none the more likely to be so towards God whom he has not. If our hearts need to be broken, and if He chooses this as the way in which they should break, so be it."

As a note of caution, I skipped one of the chapters, as I found it not really necessary for my edification:) I do not agree with everything Lewis writes, but enjoy his books nevertheless.

Before I started "The Four Loves", I read "The Great Divorce" in 48 hours. It was really good! I haven't sat down and finished a book that fast in a very long time. What next? :)

"Raw! Raw! cut."

Libby and I had a craving for no-bake cookies last night, so I hopped on the computer and got hold of a recipe and then proceeded to change it beyond recognition. Here's the result!

Healthy no-bake cookies

3/4 C agave or honey

1/2 C unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 C raw coconut oil, liquified over low heat

1/2 C almond butter

2 C oats

3/4 C brewer's yeast flakes (nutritional yeast)

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp salt

Mix all ingredients well and drop by rounded tablespoons onto a cookie sheet. Transfer to the refrigerator to harden for a few whiles. Move cookies to an airtight container and enjoy at will:)

Why on earth does Elise insist on putting brewer's yeast in these cookies? Well, because it is really good for you! It is very rich in B vitamins, chromium and fiber. Chromium is especially important in my family, because we all seem to have pancreas problems, and chromium is really good for your pancreas. It is also safer to eat chromium-rich foods to supply your deficiency than to take it in supplement form because you can overdo it. One word of warning, it is possible to eat too much brewer's yeast and it can make you sick, so just be careful.

A loose canon

Our family is big(and I do mean BIG)into classical music. While Pachelbel's canon is not our favorite, due to huge over-playing for weddings, we have thoroughly enjoyed the following rendition by the excellent Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

Someone in our household found this video a few days ago, and we have listened to it 3 times so far:) I think you will like it too...

I counted 6 different music styles in this video. Does anyone hear more than that?
